Piercing Aftercare
Oral Piercings
· Swelling is normal and the majority of swelling is gone in 3 to 5 days but some swelling may last for 3-4 weeks. Swelling can be reduced by sucking on chipped ice. Do not use a straw. Expect discomfort for a few days. If you want pain medication be sure it is aspirin free. It is normal to have a secretion. This would become a scab if the piercing were on the outside of the body and is part of the healing process.
· AVOID - Chewing gum, fingernails, pencils, etc. during healing. Don't share plates, cups or eating utensils. Tobacco products increase the risks and lengthens the healing time. Aspirin, caffeine, and alcohol can cause additional swelling, bleeding, and discomfort. Spicy, salty, acidic, or hot temperature foods and drinks.
· NO! Oral sexual contact, including (wet) kissing during the healing period.
· DO NOT play with, remove, or let others touch your jewelry or piercing.
· DO's- check the barbell twice daily to be sure the threaded balls are tight. Be sure to wash your hands with antibacterial soap before touching your piercings or jewelry. Eat soft food in small bites, be careful with forks. Buy a new toothbrush as your old one may contain bacteria.
· CLEANING- Tech 2000 or Biotene are effective alcohol-free antimicrobial rinses. They should be diluted with bottled water as per their instructions. Rinse mouth with a cleaning solutions for 30-60 seconds 6-8 times a day during the healing period, especially after meals.
Mild non-iodized sea salt rinses can also help with the healing. Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon to 8 oz. of warm water. Rinse for 10-15 seconds twice a day.
If you are cleaning too often, the top of your tongue will turn to a white or yellowish color.
· WARNING - When the swelling has gone down, it is recommended that you change to a shorter barbell to avoid chipping/cracking your teeth or causing gum damage. Acrylic balls can also help to minimize oral damage.
Facial & Body Piercing
You're OK- Bleeding, bruising, and/ or swelling is not uncommon. You may feel stinging, burning, or aching for several days. During healing, secretion of a whitish-yellowish fluid is normal and forms a crust, it is not pus. Also, once healed you may secrete a semi-solid white substance called sebum; again, this is not pus, but indicates a healed piercing. Piercings tend to have a series of "ups and downs". Be patient and keep cleaning throughout the entire healing period.
AVOID- Alcohol, peroxide, Betadine, or Hibiclens as they can hinder the healing process. Do not apply ointments such as Bacitracin, Neosporin or any triple antibiotic. They seal out oxygen and can cause complications
Do Not - use band aids, but if necessary use a sterile dressing. Do not immerse your piercing in water for 2-6 weeks. No tanning beds and minimize exposure to the sun for the same time period.
CLEANING -
Clean your piercing once a day with a mild liquid antimicrobial/germicidal medicated soap. Inferior alternatives such as liquid antibacterial soap should be diluted with distilled or bottled water. In the shower wash your body first and clean your piercing last.
Use Q-tips to help remove any crusty material from the jewelry. Apply the cleaning solution to your jewelry and gently rotate or move the jewelry to effectively clean the interior of the piercing. Rinse completely.
Do not use towels or hair dryers to dry pierced areas so as to avoid lint or bacteria from possibly entering the piercing.
Sea salt soaks at least once a day can expedite healing. Dilute 1/4 teaspoon of salt in 8oz. of warm distilled water in a clean cup. Invert the cup over the piercing forming a vacuum and soak for a few minutes. Use a cottonball or gauze pad soaked in the sea salt solution for difficult placements areas.
REMEMBER
Proper hygiene of yourself, clothing, and home will help in the proper healing of your tattoo or piercing.
